AdSense Questions

May 30th, 2007 at 01:47 am

I know very little about AdSense but decided to add it to one of my blogs since that site gets thousands of hits per month. It is basically my hobby site but it seems that many bloggers have this type of advertising on their sites and some seem to make money with it. Does anyone here have any experience with AdSense? Do you really make money with it?

I despise Adsense. I think it annoys readers like crazy and makes a website look tasteless, crass, greedy.

Adsense advertises some shlocky products and businesses that I would not want my name associated with. I campaigned against it being introduced to the website I used to work on. The "deciders" went with it and had such an uproar from users that they took it down within about three weeks, if I recall. Some of the readership did leave over the issue. It was problematic in that on one of our nature oriented sites, Adsense was linking products that were harmful to the site topical aspects of nature. It also served links to ads that the readership found inapproriate on a "family oriented" site which did have some users who were children. Another problem is that if you have reader comments on your blog and Adsense is allowed to link within the commentor's words, your commentors might well resent have their words "twisted" into an ad.

That said, a favorite website of mine recently added on Adsense. It annoys me and interrupts my reading, but I have not abandoned the site. If I could find a similar site of equal quality without Adsense, I would go to that one, instead.

It may bring you some money. But at a PRICE.

I don't think my opinion will count after Joan's strong 'NO'... but I think they are good. A person searches for something and gets directed to your content and there are ads on your website for stuff the person searched for. So the ads are not totally unwanted. The user might click on the ad because he is interested in it. Also, the ads are not annoying at all.
However, I very rarely click on adsense ads (or any ads). I also think big businesses should not display adsense ads in their first page... looks silly if not greedy and tasteless.

I don't really even see them. My mind just tunes out things like that, side ads and banner ads (unless they are really creative). I find adsense relatively harmless. What I hate are the ones that climb on top of what you are reading and don't have an easily noticeable close feature.

Oh my gosh. I am so sorry. Adsense is fine! It is Intellitext I was speaking about. Major, major goof. Intellitext no; Adsense yes. Really I apologize to you and to AdSense.

Thank you all for the info. I see the ads in many website but I too tend to tune them out and have actually never clicked on any ad on the internet. Just wanted to know what I was getting myself into.
